What do you do? Provide private childbirth education, birth doula services, and postpartum doula support.

What sets your business apart from others? Well Born Baby is a team of Certified Doulas, Childbirth Educators and Lactation Consultants empowering women in Philadelphia, Wilmington, and along the Main Line and surrounding suburbs to become confident mothers. We prepare families for the big day, from writing a birth plan to informing them of their choices surrounding their baby’s birth. After they welcome their little one, we are on hand to help as they navigate the world of motherhood. From nursing to sleep issues to finding a bra that fits, we’ve got their back. 

Many doulas get into the doula business for the personal reasons they feel about birth. I leave my feelings about birth at the door when working with clients. This isn't about how I feel, I've had my own babies, but my clients should birth feeling informed, empowered, and happy with their delivery - no matter how they ultimately deliver. There is no right way to have a baby. I believe this is what has also led us to have trusted working relationships and referrals with many area providers. They know we're there to work as a team.

Also, our group prenatals are a unique offering that Well Born Baby started many years ago. It allows clients to meet other expectant couples, meet the potential backup doulas, and to have supplemental information on birth plans, emotional support, and comfort techniques that they may not have received in their childbirth education class or that they would like additional time working on.

What should we know about your business and/or its offerings/services?  Well Born Baby is unique in the childbirth education and doula business in that we've been around as long as we have, provide unbiased support, and offer a team approach. Our goal is for the woman and partner to feel fully informed and supported in their decision-making process. There is no right way to give birth and we are not there to judge. We offer classes and support for moms planning natural deliveries, those wanting to use an epidural, those attempting to go with the flow, and those with planned c-sections. With over 12 years providing labor support, our group has attended well over 600 births at various locations. 

What did you want to be growing up? Actually a doctor, until the night before the MCAT when I backed out and didn't want to be responsible for making life and death decisions. I then went to grad school for Biology, was a TA, and then did research, finally working as the Environmental Planner for Chester County before having my first child. I switched to a midwife in the 3rd trimester of my first pregnancy, didn't know they existed until then. I have said since that if I'd known about midwifery I would have gone that route. Having been told, "you're not a nurse/midwife yet?!" I've applied twice to nursing/midwifery school after starting Well Born Baby. Both times I've been talked out of it by my own midwife, a former head nurse/IBCLC. At this point, Well Born Baby is so successful and I get to enjoy the best part of the midwifery/nursing job in working with couples to have their best labor and delivery experience.

What inspired you to open your business? Not long after my first child was born, I met Elizabeth, my business partner, and we quickly bonded over shared philosophies about a relaxed attitude towards natural parenting. We had both experienced well-supported pregnancies and deliveries with a midwife, and had fallen into comfortable nursing relationships with our babies. But the more moms we met, the more we realized…our experiences were the exceptions in this age of planned C-sections and formula that arrives on your doorstep.

We committed ourselves to educating and supporting women in having the birthing and breastfeeding experience they want and Well Born Baby was born.

What do you like doing in your free time? Spending time with my husband and three children, going to cross fit, and going to the beach or lake....or any place warm!

Favorite local restaurant? Tequila's in the city or Tired Hands in the burbs.
