What do you do? I'm an Acupuncturist, and over the past 18 years I've specialized in Acupuncture for Fertility. While I love helping men, women and couples conceive, I basically fell into this specialization because it was what people were coming to me for. I quickly realized how great the need was and just how helpful we could be. Through our multiple offices, we coordinate with fertility clinics all over the area and have helped make over 3,000 babies to date. I also host and produce a podcast called Waiting For Babies, where we tell the stories of those experiencing infertility in hopes of reducing the stigma surrounding the experience that 1 in 10 couples experience.
What sets your business apart from others? The scope of what we are able to offer is much larger than any other acupuncture for fertility practitioners in the area. We are always available to provide treatment - we're always on call. Name any holiday, we've been there, in a fertility clinic. No other acupuncturist is willing to do that. Additionally, we have such a wide range of practitioners who all have their individual styles and approaches to health - we have someone for everyone.
What should we know about your business and/or its offerings/services? Our services are often most effective when used together as part of a holistic treatment plan. For example, when treating the aches and pains of pregnancy, we often see better, faster results when our patients combine acupuncture and chiropractic. Additionally, while our services can be used to treat a massive range of ailments, they are also an important part of preventative care.
Staff Member Introductions: Tansy Briggs, L.OM.
With a Masters of Science in Oriental Medicine (MSOM), Tansy joined the Healing Arts Center at our Bryn Mawr location in 2011. Tansy’s most noted successes are in the treatment of stress, pain and injuries, chronic illnesses, life transitions, peri-menopause and menopause, heart health, endocrine health, hormone balancing, correcting metabolic imbalances, health and emotional issues affecting children (infants through teens), fertility, pregnancy (all stages) and post-partum care.
Vashni Nilon, L.Ac.
Vashni is a licensed acupuncturist with a real love of Western Medicine. Her first experience with acupuncture was after a wretched year of chemotherapy and surgery. She is currently cancer free and knew from her first acupuncture treatment that this is what she wanted to do for the rest of her life. Her other specialties and passions are patients dealing with cancer, anxiety, depression and pain of all kinds. A big proponent of corporate wellness, she, along with Steve Mavros, implemented an acupuncture program at Urban Outfitters which is still going strong today.
Heather Mancini, L.Ac., R.N.
Along with being an Acupuncturist, Heather is a practicing Registered Nurse and has worked with adult, pediatric and infants in the neonatal ICU. Her interest in practicing under an Eastern model of healthcare came gradually as she experienced the pain of her patients and her own health struggles. She was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and decided that she needed to take control of her health. It was through this struggle that she was introduced to acupuncture and began a new take on life. Heather's Specialties: Pain, fatigue, eating disorders, anxiety (generalized and specific), unexplained digestive symptoms and insomnia.
What did you want to be growing up? I wanted to be a cardiologist. My uncle's boss had one of the first open heart surgeries, and I was fascinated. I once wrote to Dr. Michael Debakey, who invented the artificial heart, telling him of my passion, and he wrote back. After my time in China, however, my perspective changed and I was drawn to Acupuncture. Plus, I really didn't want to take the MCATS.
What inspired you to open your business? After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania with a B.A. in Psychology, I began my Chinese Medicine training in Shanghai, China at Yue Yang Hospital. My eyes were open to the integrated nature of Traditional Chinese Medicine into their modern healthcare system, resulting in amazing patient outcomes. When I returned home, I completed a Masters of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine at the oldest acupuncture school in the US, the New England School of Acupuncture. I was excited to return back to Philadelphia with the hopes of bringing an integrated approach to hospitals, as I saw in Shanghai, for the betterment of the whole patient. However, I was shocked at the walls I hit in incorporating an integrative approach. Even now, hospitals have only started adding acupuncturists to their staff in the past 1-2 years, making them about 15 years behind the curve. I knew the best way to provide care the way I wanted to, I had to start my own business.
What do you like doing in your free time? I'm always looking for something new to do - new workouts, new foods, new ways to be active. I travel a lot, I recently went to Puerto Rico to hike and see Hamilton there!
Favorite local restaurant? I have a rotation of a few favorites. Parc, Tinto, Dimitris.
